Summer dog bans lift on 1 October at many UK beaches. Here’s where to take your dog hunting this autumn, and where you never have to stop. If you hunt with a dog, summer is a juggling act. Half the best-known beaches on the coast put their main stretches off-limits from May to September, and …
Rock Pools, Oil Shale and a 400-Year Glass Story Kimmeridge Bay is a fair but fascinating sea glass hunting beach, with the shingle near the slipway and the shale crevices, gravel pockets and rock-pool margins exposed at lower water the main targets. Green, brown and white are the most common finds, with blue, aqua and …
Shingle Bar, Wartime Ghosts and a Beach That Changed History Slapton Sands is a fair but worthwhile sea glass hunting beach, best approached as a long shingle search rather than a single hotspot. Start at Torcross and work the latest strandline and lower shingle, then try the quieter central section around the memorial before finishing …
Captain Cook’s Village and the Dinosaur Coast Staithes is a good sea glass hunting beach, especially around the harbour, Beck Mouth, and the rocky foreshore exposed at lower water. Start where Staithes Beck meets the harbour, then work the shingle and pebble beds across the small beach before checking the rock crevices and trapped pockets …
Hunting in the Shadow of the Forth Bridge South Queensferry is a good but challenging sea glass hunting spot, best suited to experienced hunters comfortable on uneven rocky foreshore. Start around Hawes Pier and the ledges beneath the Forth Bridge, then work east through the gullies, crevices and trapped shingle pockets exposed as the tide …
Beachcombing at the West Wight’s Best-Kept Secret Fort Victoria is a fair but rewarding sea glass hunting beach, especially in the narrow shingle and gravel pockets east of the fort. Start on the strandline below the fort, then work the loose gravel between larger rocks as more foreshore opens, before continuing east towards Fort Albert …
Scotland’s Underrated Firth of Forth Find Musselburgh is a fair but worthwhile sea glass hunting beach, especially on East Beach beyond Fisherrow Harbour towards the River Esk. Work the high-tide strandline first, then move through the shingle patches and mixed pebble clusters exposed as the tide falls, rather than spending too long on the broad …
Where the Normans Landed and the Smugglers Ran Pevensey Bay is a fair but worthwhile sea glass hunting beach, with the best starting point around Sea Road where the groynes and coarse shingle create easy-to-read hunting zones. Work the upper strandline first, then move through the coarser shingle ridges and deeper pebble pockets between the …
A Suffolk Harbour Gem With History in Every Find Southwold is a good sea glass hunting beach, but The Denes south of Gun Hill is the main target rather than the sandy pier beach. Work the upper shingle bank, the shingle-to-sand transition and the increasingly mixed pebble pockets towards the River Blyth harbour mouth. Green, …
Hunting the Jurassic Coast Chesil Beach can be good for sea glass, but the Portland end is the main target rather than the full 18-mile shingle bank. Start at Chesil Cove, where the largest pebbles and high-energy shoreline create temporary ridges, gullies and pockets, then try the much more sheltered Church Ope Cove on Portland’s …
